Equalities Secretary Announces Churches Should Hold Gay Weddings

The Women and Equality Secretary has spoken out, informing the Church of England to “keep up” with the times and allow sex-same couples to marry in church.

“I think it’s quite important we recognize that, for many churches, including the Church of England.

That was something they were not yet willing to have in their churches.

I think it is important that the church in a way keeps up and is part of a modern country. I wouldn’t prescribe to them how they should deal with that.”

As of now, the Church of England legislation has banned any clergy from marrying gay couples or blessing the marriages of same-sex couples.

The issue of same-sex marriages has a divided opinion within the Church of England.

Some are pushing for greater inclusion of same-sex couples while the others are resisting changes to church teaching they fear are unbiblical.

A Church of England spokesman expressed that the political leaders understand that the church has to figure out their position concerning this issue.

“Parliament understood that it was an important aspect of religious freedom to allow Christian churches and other faiths to decide whether or not they could embrace same-sex marriage.”
