THE CAP-ITAL OFFENCE – Written By Mabel Frank

Remember that song we used to sing way back in kindergarten when we were in Sunday school?…“Give me a J (J), give me an E (E), give me an S (S)…” etcetera.

If you don’t know that song, you are probably one of the two people on earth who don’t and I have got to ask, where have you been? That said, this song got me thinking about a lot of stuff, particularly about the name, Jesus.

As believers and followers of Christ, this name is the most important name in our lives. In fact, every authority or right that we have in God’s kingdom is founded on this name. So bearing all this in mind, tell me why anyone would feel right about writing a sentence like this;

“I love jesus and god loves me too, his word tells me so and the holy spirit confirms it.”

Praiseworld

Not exactly a crime but not a pleasant sight either. Apart from the general law of writing etiquette that demands that all names of persons or places should begin with a capital letter, there is the logic that when you infer to someone of a higher authority, it follows that a measure of reverence be given. Be it in speech or in writing. While our write-ups may not be constantly graded, it wouldn’t hurt to show our reverence and respect for God. Check this out;

“I love Jesus and God loves me too, His Word tells me so and the Holy Spirit confirms it.”

Praiseworld

Doesn’t this second sentence have more impact than the first? Amazing how such a tiny little detail made a difference right? Why don’t you give it a try? It’s really easy once you get the basics. And they are;

  • No matter the name you refer to God as, begin with a capital letter.
  • Even when using a pronoun to refer to God, you use a capital letter.
  • John 1:1 says “… the Word was God” therefore using the Word in reference to God must also begin with a capital letter.

There! Told you it was easy. You don’t have to be a playwright to write it right (excuse the pun).
