South African Jazz Singer, Lulu Dikana Passes On

Lulu Dikana

Gospel/Inspirational Jazz singer Lulu Dikana, the older sister of singer and songwriter Zonke Dikana passed away in the hospital on Wednesday, 3rd December, 2014.

Sound African Recordings released a statement on behalf of her family:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected and tragic loss of soul songstress Lulu Dikana who passed away last night [Wednesday, the 3rd of December] after a short illness while being treated in hospital.

Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends and all her fans who came to know and love her through her music.”

Funeral details would be made available as soon as they had been finalized.

Dikana, who was recently part of R&B singer John legend’s opening acts during the Johannesburg leg of his world tour, had only just released her new album called ‘I Came To Love You’.

Dikana told The Times in an earlier interview that she suffered from an oesophageal perforation.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would be as serious as that,” Dikana had said earlier in an interview with The Times where  she attributed the condition to passive smoking while at the Barnyard Theatre in 2007 and 2008, working on the production of Hot Chocolate.

Sowetan Entertainment Editor Lesley Mofokeng said on Lulu Dikana’s passing,

“It was very sad to wake up to news like this. Lulu was a brilliant musician who invested time in her talent and was hitting the prime of her career. My heart goes out to her sister, Zonke Dikana and the rest of the Dikana family.”

Dikana was billed to perform at Skyroomlive on 5 December but unfortunately had to cancel due to illness.

May her gentle soul rest in peace!
