ABOUT LUNGELO & PORTIA aka LP
Lungelo was born in the small but warm town of Alice in the Eastern Cape on May 27, 1987 and moved to Umlazi in KZN at 2 days old and was raised there. He was always surrounded by music, at church and at home with his uncle’s playing soul, RnB, Hip Hop and Gospel. At school he was part of the choir and was involved until he matriculated.
In high school he was part of a Marimba band, which was the first instrument he mastered. He also participated in various talent shows and eventually won two, namely the School IDOLS competition in grade 12 and a local talent show hosted by the Boardwalk Mall in Richard’s Bay in the same year.
After high school he went on to pursue a music degree at the UKZN School of Music which he completed in 2012, majoring in Pop Voice, Jazz Voice & Keyboard Studies. During his years of study he was extensively involved in the church band and youth band, singing, writing songs and playing the keyboard and eventually became the church’s acting music director and the youth’s music director.
Young people were always his passion, hence producing and directing a number of youth drama and musical productions. Today he is a professional singer, keyboardist and a member of LP and he continues to produce and do back-up vocals for artists such as Neville D and Ernie Smith.
Portia was born in the majestic mountains of KZN in a town called Eshowe on November 25, 1986 and was raised there in the early stages of her life. She was exposed to music from a young age as her mother was a singer in the church choir and a participant in Shell Road to Fame in the 1980’s.
Her late uncle played the guitar and her late aunt sang as well. Portia would constantly find herself in her mother’s rehearsals and discovered her passion for singing. In her school years, she would participate in talent shows where she would sing and dance and was also part of the school choir.
In recent years she’s been a part of a group called Soulful where she did lead vocals and back-ups. She also became a lead singer at NCF in the church band and youth band. There she discovered her song writing and vocal arranging gifts.
Her musical passion was channelled towards young people hence she was always actively involved in youth drama and musical productions where she could express her choreographic talents as well.
Today, she is a professional singer and a member of LP, and continues to do back-up vocals for the likes of Neville D & Ernie Smith.
